If you wanted to feel like you were witnessing the start of something truly incredible, you should have been at Del Water Gap’s sold-out show at Rough Trade NYC last night. Actually you should have been there last year when they played a gig to 6 people and suggested a game of spin the bottle as a means of getting everyone closer. Last night had a more "truth or dare" feel, though, as lead singer Holden Jaffe so aptly put it. Whether it was intimate fan favorite, "High Tops", or the more anthemic "Let's Pretend", their unique brand of folk rock was met with uproarious cheers and a crowd-sourced sing-a-long. It was both a celebratory and bittersweet occasion as the band bid farewell to 5 year member, drummer Charlie Schlinkert, but I'm sure all could attest there couldn't be a better way to go out.
